Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal
Some Wizards fans will object to this deal. They’ll suggest that they’d be better off getting as much draft capital as possible in exchange for Beal.
Fair. At the same time, no draft capital is as valuable as the capital you already have. This deal will help an already struggling Wizards team bottom out. They should be able to join the Victor Wembanyama race following this trade.
Of course, that’s not all they’re getting here. The Wizards are landing Tyler Herro. In essence, he’s a direct replacement for Beal who’s several years younger. He still has room to grow, where Beal is likely a finished product.
If this isn’t enough for Washington, they probably should have moved Beal sooner. It’s been several years since he was in the running for the scoring title. Still, flipping him for Herro and a pick should be good enough for them.

Finally, this deal allows them to do so without taking on any meaningful salary. The Spurs function as a salary dumping ground here. Should they?
