The Brooklyn Nets made a huge move this weekend ahead of the NBA trade deadline. After receiving a trade request from Kyrie Irving to end the week, the team moved fast to find a trade partner that would be willing to take him. The Dallas Mavericks stepped up to the plate.
Desperate to add a star alongside Luka Doncic, the Mavericks acquired Irving and Markieff Morris in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick and two future second-round picks.
That trade package is likely as good as it was going to get for the Nets. They weren’t going to appease Irving and send him to a team that he wanted to be on, such as the Los Angeles Lakers, so the market for him was small.
Extracting that kind of value from Dallas in a deal for a player with the baggage of Irving and who plans on testing free agency this summer is a job well done. But, Sean Marks may not be done making moves.
According to Marc Stein on his Substack, there is a chance that the Nets could now re-route Dinwiddie in another deal prior to the February 9th deadline.
This season has been a nice bounce-back for Dinwiddie. He signed a three-year, $54 million deal with the Washington Wizards during the 2022 offseason but struggled early on. It was his first action since injuring his ACL with the Nets early in the 2021-22 season.

His performance with the Wizards was underwhelming, to say the least. He was traded ahead of the deadline to the Mavericks as part of the return package for Kristaps Porzingis and he has played very well since.
In 76 games with the Mavericks, Dinwiddie averaged 17.1 points per game on an impressive .466/.404/.788 shooting split. It was the best shooting stretch he has been on in his career, benefiting greatly from playing alongside Doncic. He added 4.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game as well during his time in Dallas.

Brooklyn will certainly need the scoring punch that he brings with Irving now heading to Dallas, but they could have bigger plans in store. Dinwiddie is certainly a name to keep an eye on the next few days ahead of the deadline.
