Kevin Durant’s Nets Have Bold Plans After Kyrie Irving Trade

The Brooklyn Nets have made the first big move of the NBA trade deadline, sending Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, along with Markieff Morris. In exchange, they received Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick and two future second-round picks.

With that now out of the way, what is next for the Nets? Without Irving in the fold, their championship ceiling has collapsed. Dinwiddie and Finney-Smith are both solid players, but it will take more than a superhero performance by Kevin Durant to knock off teams such as the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference.

That is something the Nets are aware of, as they already have some big plans in place. While making an appearance on NBA Countdown, ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski provided an update on what Brooklyn is planning with the trade deadline only three days away.

“Now for Brooklyn, they want to get back to work,” said Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday. “They got the three picks they got in this trade, they have a future Philadelphia first-round pick. They’ll be aggressive with those picks between now and Thursday’s trade deadline to try to get more help around Kevin Durant.

“Quite honestly, this is an organization that wants Kevin Durant to stay committed. Stay the course with this reshaping of this roster. They’re going to continue between now and Thursday to do that.”

With Sean Marks leading the front office, the Nets have shown that they aren’t afraid to make a splash acquisition. They possess the pieces to make another one as they have enough draft capital and contracts to build a competitive offer for any player that may come available.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, & Brooklyn Nets Updates

If they want Durant to stay long-term and not look to be traded again this upcoming offseason, making a move ahead of the deadline is imperative. The Nets have to show that they are committed to upgrading the roster around him as philosophical differences were reportedly one of the reasons he requested a trade in the offseason in the first place.

Two teams that the Nets will likely be making calls to are the Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors. Both teams could shake their rosters up in a big way ahead of the deadline and have All-Star caliber players that would help Brooklyn get back into the picture as contenders.

Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, OG Anunoby, Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam would all make sense for the Nets to pair with Durant. They now have three first-round picks at their disposal, which can be used to build a very compelling trade package.
