Why The Philadelphia 76ers Do The Deal 

As far as the Sixers are concerned, this is not a complicated trade. 

It is about getting a backup big man. Period. There is no question that this is a major need for the team, and this deal meets that need. 

As a defensive upgrade for the Sixers, Holmes would be an ideal candidate to replace Montrezl Harrell.

Harrell is no doubt a good player, but he is undersized and cannot really protect the rim. Holmes would always be able to provide the Sixers with the defensive upgrade they need. 

The fact that Thybulle is unable to shoot can be a problem for a team as they advance deeper into the playoffs. If the Sixers get as far as they are hoping to go, he will likely fall out of this rotation.

Thybulle is set to reach restricted free agency soon, too. Getting ahead of trading him before having to match an offer sheet would be an ideal potential outcome for the Sixers.
