Expectations are tricky. Sometimes, you can sell yourself short just trying to live up to them. NBA players can be similar.
Suppose you were born into a very rich family. The expectation may be that you’ll make your own fortune. Meanwhile, you might prefer a simple job in the trades.
Each one comes into the league with expectations. When they don’t meet them, we can sell them short.
For example, look at Obi Toppin of the New York Knicks. He’s a former lottery pick who hasn’t performed like one to date.
By contrast, Kenyon Martin Jr. of the Houston Rockets has far exceeded the expectations around him as a second-round pick. In fact, the two are almost equally productive at this point.
