The Portland Trail Blazers made some big moves during the 2022 NBA offseason, hoping that they would be able to climb back into contention in the Western Conference. There was some excellent play earlier in the season, but in the last few weeks, they have been well under the .500 mark.

Portland entered 2023 with a winning record but has gone 5-9 since. In the congested Western Conference, one good stretch of basketball will catapult you up the standings as third and 13th are separated by only five games.

They are a team to keep an eye on leading up to the trade deadline, as even at their best, it is hard to call the Trail Blazers true contenders. They have been linked to a few players, but one that is unlikely to go anywhere is Jerami Grant.

Portland acquired Grant this past offseason from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for a future first-round pick and two future second-round picks. It was viewed as an excellent deal for the Trail Blazers, who were rebuilding their roster around Damian Lillard.

The Trail Blazers intend to keep Grant long-term but it will not be cheap. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, Portland has offered Grant a max extension. That isn’t something he is interested in at this time, as the offseason could bring an even bigger offer to the table.

Jerami Grant became eligible for a contract extension with the Trail Blazers earlier this month, and Portland has offered the athletic forward his maximum possible deal of four years, $112 million, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Grant has not accepted the offer, sources said, largely because the Blazers can extend him a larger contract with an additional fifth year when free agency begins June 30.

Grant is having a solid first season with the Trail Blazers, providing everything they had hoped he would. He is a reliable second option behind Lillard, averaging 21.3 points per game while making 48.8 percent of his shot attempts overall and 42.1 percent of his 3-point attempts.

The Syracuse product is pulling down 4.4 rebounds, handing out 2.4 assists and registering 0.9 steals and 0.8 blocks in 35.8 minutes per game as well. His defense remains top-notch, which is as big of a reason as any that the Trail Blazers pursued him so aggressively.

But, it is fair to question just how much money and years Portland should commit to Grant. He will be 29 in March and as currently constructed, this isn’t a contending roster. But, the Trail Blazers may not have another choice to make as they are capped out for years to come.
