Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal 

Well, obviously the Raptors don’t do this deal to acquire Bertans. 

We don’t mean to be disrespectful. Still, Bertans is on a notoriously bad contract. He’s a defensive liability – that typically doesn’t fly with Nick Nurse, either. 

They’re flipping Trent Jr. for a first-round pick here. There’s no complicated logic at hand – the Raptors are compromising their present to enhance their future. 

That makes sense. The upcoming draft class has an astonishing amount of talent. It’s probably too late for the Raptors to land top odds, but they could absolutely land a long-term starter or even a star by bottoming out.

If they can get a future first in the process, that’s even better. Should the Mavericks send them one?
