The NBA’s trade market functions similarly. Teams are hesitant to acquire players on expiring contracts. That’s exactly why they’re sometimes available at a discount.
For example, Fred VanVleet of the Toronto Raptors is due to hit free agency this summer. So is Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
