When an NBA team needs to make an upgrade, they have to part with future resources. This can be a problem for the league’s contenders.
In many cases, they’ve exhausted their resources. That’s part of how they became contenders. Still, if the team just doesn’t look good enough, they may want to upgrade it.
If they’ve already spent their resources, that’s not an easy task. In that event, the team may have to take a gamble on a lower-value player. They may not have the resources to do better than that.
For example, take the Brooklyn Nets. They’re a serious title contender, but they could use an upgrade in the frontcourt.
On the other hand, they’re a little light on the resources they’d need to make a big one.
