Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Consider this an act of desperation for the Mavericks. This is how badly they need a secondary ball handler.
Russell would be an interesting choice. He’s a passable floor spacer, but he isn’t an elite one. Some will argue that he’s a poor fit with Doncic.
Fair. On the other hand, the Mavericks need a player who can create offense for himself – and preferably, others. Russell fits the bill. He’s a dynamic pick-and-roll ball-handler who draws defensive attention.
Meanwhile, this deal allows the Mavs to acquire such a player without giving up an unprotected pick. If all goes well, they’ll have an inside track on re-signing Russell this summer as well.
