The Magic don’t have a major reason to do this trade. Instead, they’ve got a bunch of minor ones that add up.
Beverley is on an expiring contract. By contrast, Harris has an extra year on his deal. This trade gives the Magic some financial flexibility heading into the summer.
It also gives them a valuable mentor. Orlando has plenty of young guards on their squad – they could use a player like Beverley to instill some defensive intensity in each.
Finally, Christie is worth taking a flier on. He’s a sweet-shooting guard/wing who could be a rotation player someday.
