Why The Detroit Pistons Do The Deal 

Here’s the thing about bad NBA contracts: they actually aren’t that bad. 

At least, as long as they aren’t in max territory. A deal like Robinson’s can actually be useful – it can be used to match contracts in a trade. For example, look at this entirely plausible trade proposal. 

Meanwhile, a rebuilding team like the Pistons could benefit from plugging a movement shooter like Robinson into their rotation. He’s a defensive liability, but that won’t matter until deep into the playoffs.

The Pistons shouldn’t expect to be there for a few years. Still, they don’t do this deal for Robinson – or his contract. They do it for the first-round pick.
