The modern NBA big man is not what he used to be. We’re not saying that he’s lesser. If anything, big men have evolved.

They simply don’t have the function that they did before. Gone are the days of laboring on the low block, waiting for an entry pass.

With the exception of stars, NBA bigs have two roles on offense today: space the floor, or catch lobs. 

Meanwhile, defensive big men are valued more than ever before. Look at Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers and Mitch Robinson of the New York Knicks.

They’re both stalwart defenders. The former spaces the floor, while the latter is a lob threat.
