Why The Atlanta Hawks Do The Deal 

There is some risk for the Hawks here. 

This deal probably won’t make them better in the short term. They’re giving up the best player involved in it. If Young is as close to requesting a trade as rumors suggest, that could be problematic. 

Yet, that Lakers pick is too good of an asset to turn down. If Young can just hang on a little longer, the Hawks could use it to make another big trade this summer. In other words, this could be part of a two-year plan for the Hawks. 

Meanwhile, Beverley could be helpful. He’s having a rough season in LA, but he’s only a year removed from a great one in Minnesota.

If he can return to form, he gives them another defensive-minded guard to compensate for Young’s struggles on that end of the floor. 

If he doesn’t, the Hawks might end up getting a little more desperate.
