NBA teams are no different than any other business. They need assets. 

We’re not strictly talking about money. NBA teams need assets in order to make trades. Those can be players, and they can be draft capital. 

Sometimes, teams are asset poor. If they’ve got a contending roster, that’s not a serious problem – unless they’re underperforming, of course. 

That’s the dilemma the Miami Heat are in. To a lesser extent, the Dallas Mavericks have the same issue.

Both of these teams are asset poor, and they each wish their record was a little better in 2022-23.
