The Brooklyn Nets have been one of the hottest teams in the NBA over the last few weeks. Since Thanksgiving, there hasn’t been a better team in the league as the Nets have won 18 out of their last 20 games.

A big reason for their success has been Kevin Durant, who is playing at an NBA level. He is leading the team with 29.7 points per game while grabbing 6.7 rebounds, handing out 5.3 assists and blocking 1.5 shots per game.

It is hard to imagine where the team would be without his level of production, but that is something we are going to find out in the coming weeks. Durant was unfortunately injured during Sunday night’s game against the Miami Heat when Jimmy Butler fell into his knee after driving to the rim and having his shot blocked by Ben Simmons.

That led to Durant remaining on the ground for a few moments, but he stayed in the game. He was rubbing his knee while going up the court and headed into the locker room once the Nets called a timeout shortly after.

Disappointingly for the Nets, they are going to be without their best player for a few weeks. Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium shared that Durant suffered an MCL sprain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. He’s expected to miss a month.

That is a huge blow for a Nets team that has never been able to find sustained success without Durant in the lineup. Last season, with Kyrie Irving still a part-time player because of COVID-19 vaccine restrictions, Durant suffered an MCL sprain to his left knee. The team went 5-17 without him, which included an 11-game losing streak.

That MCL sprain to his left knee caused him to miss more than 1.5 months of playing time, which derailed the Nets’ season. The only positive is that this injury is reportedly less severe, meaning Durant will hopefully return to the court quicker this time around.

Luckily for Brooklyn, their schedule is decently easy to navigate in the coming weeks. Brooklyn has nine games remaining in January, and many of them are against teams that currently have a record below the .500 mark.
