Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
For the Suns, this may be one last Hail Mary. They’re trying to maintain their status as contenders before they consider blowing it up.
If you haven’t noticed, this team has regressed in 2022-23. At 20-16, they’re sixth in the Western Conference. This does not look like the world beater we’ve grown accustomed to watching in recent years.
This deal could make them better. Wood’s ability to shoot gives the offense a new wrinkle. Moreover, a platoon of quality defensive wings like Finney-Smith, Mikal Bridges, and (when he returns) Cam Johnson may be able to mask his defensive limitations, too.
If they can’t, and the whole thing falls apart? At least the Suns got a first-round pick and a swap in exchange for the seemingly disgruntled Ayton.

If it’s time to rebuild anyway, that’s a good return. In the future, it could help them net Devin Booker’s next partner.
