The modern NBA big is not what he used to be.
That’s not a complaint. Although, some lament the big men of old. Sure, it was fun watching giants battle under the basket on a nightly basis throughout NBA history.
Still, there’s no denying that today’s big men are more skilled. Most importantly, bigs today are expected to be able to shoot from long range. As a result, bigs are now expected to be able to guard the perimeter as well.
Kristaps Porzingis is a quality modern big. He can space the floor, and he’s a strong rim protector as well. Still, he’s not great at defending the perimeter.
By that standard, Jaren Jackson Jr. may be the archetypical modern big.
