When measuring how much adversity they’re up against, teams don’t strictly look at their record. They look at the entire history of their current core. 

For example, if a similar group was together last year, last year’s performance matters. If the team is underperforming after a stellar season, there’s still hope for them – they may just need a minor adjustment. 

The Miami Heat made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021-22 with a core that’s similar to the group they have now. They know they’re capable of more, so they may be hesitant to blow it up. 

By contrast, the Washington Wizards added Kristaps Porzingis, he’s playing well, and they still don’t look any better than last year.
