Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
Typically, when a team trades a star player these days, they look for a future-focused package in return. That isn’t exactly the case here – the Wolves would be hoping this deal makes them better.
It certainly caters to Edwards more. By removing Towns, they’ll be able to pick up the pace – he’s a quick 5, but he’s a slow 4. Meanwhile, Anunoby is a master of creating transition opportunities – and Edwards would happily feast on them.
Meanwhile, VanVleet is a better fit compared to the prodding D’Angelo Russell. All told, this deal helps the Wolves pick up the pace. Moreover, between Anunoby and Rudy Gobert, they’d have two Defensive Player of the Year candidates.
Of course, if it doesn’t make them better, they’d still be making up most of the draft capital they lost in the Gobert deal.
