Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal 

Here, the Heat are swapping a bad deal for a less consequential bad one. 

From a pure value perspective, Bertans may be on a worse contract than Lowry. His defensive shortcomings render him virtually unplayable in the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Heat already have such a player in Duncan Robinson. Are we sure this is the right move? 

No. Still, the key is that Bertans’ contract is almost half the size of Lowry’s. He’ll be easier to move by virtue of that fact even if he’s strictly being treated as dead money.

Finally, Powell’s deal is expiring. Absorbing Bertans’ deal may not be optimal, but this deal does clean up Miami’s books.
