Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
The Bulls don’t exactly do this deal to get better right now. At the same time, we’re not sure that isn’t what would happen.
After all, Monk is quietly having a strong season. His off-ball acumen may be more of a compliment to Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic than DeRozan’s game. Meanwhile, Mitchell’s strong point of attack defense would be a nice addition to this group as well.
Perhaps most importantly, Holmes provides rim protection that this team is lacking. He doesn’t have the offensive skillset to usurp Vucevic in the starting group, but the Bulls would now have a pair of bigs that they could lean into depending on the situation.
Still, getting a first-round pick for DeRozan before it’s too late is the main benefit here. At 9-14, the Bulls don’t look like a team who should be thinking in win-now terms.
