With so much focus on three-point spacing, sometimes, vertical spacing gets overlooked.
Vertical spacing, in simple terms, means dunking ability. NBA teams especially value it in a big man. A center who functions as a lob threat makes pick-and-roll sets easier.
Richaun Holmes is a good example. He’s an offensively limited player, but he can certainly catch a lob. He doesn’t need to do much else to provide value on the offensive end of the floor.
By contrast, Domantas Sabonis provides very little vertical spacing. It’s a good thing he provides so much else.
