Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

There is some irony in how we’ve framed this. At 12-11, the Mavericks are 9th in the West – one spot below the Jazz.

On the other hand, they are built to win now. At least, they should be. Whenever a team rosters a generational player like Luka Doncic, they ought to be in a position to make a deep playoff run.

Unfortunately, these Mavericks do not appear poised to do so. Most would agree that, in large part, that’s because they’re lacking secondary ball handling behind Doncic. That’s where Sexton comes in.

No, his basic counting stats won’t wow you this season. At the same time, his minutes have been limited. On a per 36 basis, Sexton is outperforming the level he was at in 2021-22 before he got hurt.
