Why The Oklahoma City Thunder Do The Deal

The Thunder were not expecting to transition into win-now mode this quickly. At the same time, what’s stopping them?

As of now, the team is 7-11. They look competitive on a nightly basis. Meanwhile, they don’t even have Chet Holmgren available.

Adding Durant won’t get them an NBA championship in 2022-23. This is a two-year plan. If they added Durant now, and some solid free agents this summer, the Thunder could be bonafide contenders in 2023-24.

If Holmgren doesn’t look ready to ancho a championship defense, guess what? They could trade him too. In all likelihood, they’d get a star in exchange.

A core group of Durant, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and another star player ought to make the Thunder as competitive as any team in the NBA.
