Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
Maybe it is too early for the Bulls to blow this core up. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend making this deal tomorrow to their front office.
At the same time, this club is too old to be 7-10. If they’re still struggling by the trade deadline, they may decide that something has to give.
This deal nets them their own first-round pick back. Arguably, that’s the most important aspect of it. If the Bulls are really struggling, they could hypothetically shut DeMar DeRozan down, tank the rest of the season, and land a premium pick.
Alternatively, they may not have to bottom out. The Bulls could use a rim protector like Bamba, and a point guard like Fultz. If they remain surprisingly competitive after this deal, that would be OK as well.
