Major Update On Kawhi Leonard’s Potential Clippers Return

The LA Clippers have begun finding their footing a little bit in recent weeks of the NBA season. After starting the season 2-4, they won six of their last eight games.

The team is beginning to find a rhythm as they are navigating minute limits and restrictions for some players as the Clippers seemingly have a different lineup each night. Tyronn Lue deserves a lot of credit for navigating this especially since one of the players that they are still waiting on is former NBA Finals MVP, Kawhi Leonard.

Leonard’s return was a highly anticipated one coming into the season. He injured his knee during the second round of the 2021 playoffs and missed the entire 2021-22 season as a result. With him in the lineup, it can be argued that the Clippers have the deepest, most talented lineup in the NBA. Unfortunately for them, he has not been able to get into the lineup.

Leonard played on opening night before missing Game 2 of the season and playing in Game 3. He was on a strict minutes limit, playing about 21 minutes in each game. However, we have not seen him on the court since that game on October 23rd because of issues with his surgically repaired knee.

Lue has admitted that there is no concrete timetable for him to return to the lineup. He couldn’t confirm whether it was a day-to-day thing or a week-to-week thing but was hoping to have him back in the lineup as soon as possible.

According to Ohm Youngmusik, we could be getting close to that return. Before the team’s game against the Nets over the weekend, Leonard took part in 5-on-5, which is usually the last step in a player’s rehab to get back on the court. Lue said that he is getting closer to a return, which is very encouraging.

While there is nothing concrete in this update either, at least the update is relatively positive as Leonard is moving toward a return and not the opposite way. This is something that will need to be managed throughout the season as Leonard will likely take more time off at some point between now and the end of the season.

Alas, as long as he is healthy and ready for the postseason, that is all that the Clippers are worried about. Having him healthy in April and May for the postseason is more important than pushing him for regular season games before Thanksgiving.
