With this deal, we’re looking to fix two struggling, would-be contenders with one deal.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been extremely underwhelming to kick off 2022-23. Thus far, the Rudy Gobert trade has looked like a disaster.
Gobert was brought in to fix the team’s interior defense, but pairing him with Karl Anthony-Towns has killed both their pacing and their spacing.
This deal should fix the latter issue. It brings in two veterans and reliable floor spacers. Moreover, Bertans’s spacing could allow the Wolves to stagger their two starting bigs more effectively. Bertans’ ability to space the floor should offset Gobert’s inability, and they’d have the inverse relationship on defense.

Meanwhile, Russell’s struggles have been a problem for the Wolves as well. The Dallas Mavericks could be smart to buy low on him. A lottery-protected pick and two questionable contracts is a low price to pay for a player with Russell’s talent.
Plus, a change of scenery could be exactly what the floor general needs. A secondary playmaker is certainly a need for Dallas. This trade could get both of these Western Conference teams back on track.
