Derrick Rose Unclear On Knicks Role, Trade Soon?

Coming into the NBA season there were a lot of questions about what the rotation for the New York Knicks would look like. After adding Jalen Brunson and Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency, the team failed to make a trade to consolidate the roster.

That left head coach Tom Thibodeau in a tough spot as he had too many players vying for playing time and not enough minutes to go around. An injury to Quentin Grimes, who has been dealing with a sore foot, has made some of the decisions easier as the Knicks are playing 10 players on most nights.

However, in the two games that he did play, the rotations were a bit messy. That led to some inconsistent playing time and undefined roles for some players, something that will likely occur again once Grimes is ready to get back onto the court.

One of the players who doesn’t know his standing currently is veteran point guard Derrick Rose.

Rose is one of Thibodeau’s favorite players, but the two have not communicated about his role and it doesn’t sound like there are any plans, at least on Rose’s end, of discussing it any time soon.

“I’m letting everybody be, man. …The last guy he wants to hear from is the guy who has been in the league for 15 years going in and complaining and bitching. Just trying to give everybody the space.”

Rose has seen his playing time cut back drastically at the start of the season as he is averaging only 12.7 minutes per game, which would be a career-low by more than four minutes. He is averaging six points per game and the only time he was less efficient shooting the ball in his career was the 10 games he appeared in after missing the 2012-13 season with a torn ACL.

The veteran has looked out of sorts when on the court, which is easy to understand if he doesn’t know his role and what is expected of him. That is something that needs to be figured out as sometimes he is the first guard off the bench and other times you wouldn’t even know he was out there.

Some of this could be occurring so that the Knicks can keep Rose healthy throughout the season and have him in the lineup later in the season when they are hopefully making a playoff push. But, given the depth the team now has in the backcourt, New York could also explore making a trade involving Rose.

There are plenty of teams that could use a veteran off the bench to lead the second unit. The Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks are a few contending teams that come to mind whose benches would benefit from the addition of someone of Rose’s caliber.
