It is rare for an NBA game in early November to be labeled as a must-win affair, but for the Golden State Warriors, Monday was as close as you could get to such a moniker.

Coming off of a road trip in which they went 0-5, the Warriors were desperate to get back into the win column as they hosted the Sacramento Kings.

Things certainly didn’t look great at times for Golden State, as the Kings led by as many as 12 points in the game. Their bench production also remains a major issue as the Warriors’ second unit was outscored 45-15. Malik Monk outscored their bench by himself with 26 for the Kings, while Davion Mitchell got close adding 12 of his own.

The entire Golden State bench had a negative plus/minus ratio in the game as they were unable to get anything going. Luckily for them, they were bailed out by Stephen Curry, who had one of his magical games.

Curry poured in 47 points, making 17-of-24 attempts from the field, including a scorching 7-of-12 from 3-point range. He grabbed eight rebounds and handed out eight assists with zero turnovers, becoming the first player in NBA history to record such a stat line without a single turnover.

“Steph was breathtaking,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “He’s one of the greatest players of all time. He plays well on so many nights… this even seemed like something special for him.”

After resting in the team’s game Friday against the New Orleans Pelicans and having two more days off, Kerr was comfortable pushing his starters’ minutes wise and it was needed. Had the Core Four of Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins not played at least 36 minutes each, there is a good chance Golden State doesn’t come away with a victory.

The Warriors needed someone to step up and put the team on their back and Curry answered the call. Green referenced the performance that Curry had during Game 4 of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics and said Monday night’s performance had a similar feel, albeit with a lot less on the line.

“It was very [2022] Game 4 of the NBA Finals to me. He just wasn’t going to allow us to lose,” Green said. “Take that with a grain of salt because I’m not saying this game was as important. But you know when to get out of the way. It was one of those times where he was taking over.”

Snapping a losing streak and getting back into the win column is always a great feeling even for a team that has experienced so many victories over the last eight seasons. But, this is far from a finished product.

Kerr still has plenty of work to do when it comes to hammering out the rotation. He said changes would be made and he held to that promise, as James Wiseman and JaMychal Green were both absent from the rotation on Monday.

They will certainly have a chance to re-enter the rotation at some point, but for now, Kerr is looking for a spark and wants to try something a little different. It must be nice as a head coach to know that he can experiment knowing he has someone capable of big nights like the one Curry just had to bail the team out.
