Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal 

It’s hard to confidently say what the Spurs ought to do. After all, it’s hard to confidently say what they’re doing. 

With that said, this deal could benefit them either way. It brings in a quality young player at a position of weakness. Trae Jones is having a career season, but Mitchell would, at the very least, compete for his starting job. 

Whether the Spurs intend on eventually firing up the tank, or continuing to compete, bringing him in could be sensible. Mitchell is a highly impactful point-of-attack defender with a solid offensive game as well. Suddenly, the Spurs would have two players who were candidates to be the future of their point guard position. 

Finally, they, like the Kings, may not find much use for Holmes. That’s fine. In essence, they’re trading McDermott for Mitchell here – Holmes is only involved to make the salaries match.

On the other hand, maybe the Spurs do use him. After all, things aren’t always what they seem – especially in the National Basketball Association.
