Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal 

At 4-3, the Raptors obviously haven’t found their identity yet. Their season could go in a number of directions from here. 

If they wanted to tank it, that could be justified. After all, the upcoming draft is absolutely loaded with talent. At the same time, so are the Raptors. They could equally justify a win-now move. 

If they wanted to make one, Poeltl could be an excellent target. This teak lacks a starting calibre centre. Christian Koloko has flashed tremendous potential, but he’s still young and raw. Meanwhile, Pascal Siakam is not really a centre, period. 

Of course, landing Poeltl doesn’t mean the Raptors have to abandon their wing-at-the-5 looks entirely. This is not Joel Embiid – Poeltl will not come on board with the assumption that he’ll function as a high-usage starter.

His role may fluctuate depending on matchups, but he should be a highly impactful big when the Raptors need him to be.
