De’Aaron Fox Has Bold Take On Tyrese Haliburton Trade

Ahead of the 2022 NBA trade deadline, the Sacramento Kings shocked some people when they decided to trade away guard Tyrese Haliburton. Haliburton was part of the package that went to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Domantas Sabonis.

It was a deal that came virtually out of nowhere as there wasn’t a single report about the Kings looking to trade their first-round pick from the 2020 NBA Draft. Haliburton had the looks of a cornerstone player and performed at a high level for the team.

But, when taking a look at the roster, it does make sense that Sacramento would want to balance out the roster. They had just paid De’Aaron Fox a huge contract and used their first-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft on another point guard, Davion Mitchell, out of Baylor. Something had to give and the Kings decided parting with Haliburton was worth getting Sabonis back as a centerpiece.

It hasn’t changed much as the Kings continue to lose games at an alarming pace even with Sabonis in the lineup. While Indiana isn’t winning much either, Haliburton is thriving with the Pacers as their starting point guard and the face of the franchise.

The trade is something that Fox recently talked about in an interview with Slam Magazine. It was a double-edged sword for the point guard, as it showed him that the Kings had a ton of faith in him; he was involved in trade rumors himself at different points but trading Haliburton away reaffirmed their confidence in him. But, on the other hand, Sacramento just traded away a very talented player, so the results on the court needed to change, and fast.

“For me, it’s like yo, they believe in me,” said Fox. “But two, it’s like motherf*, we just traded somebody who could be a franchise point guard either here or somewhere else. So, you better get on your s***; you better start winning.”

If the Kings can snap their 16-year playoff drought and Sabonis continues playing at an All-Star level, this trade will be seen as a success. The franchise is desperate for a postseason berth and if a player acquired in the deal helps them achieve that, it will be viewed in a positive light.

However, there is a real chance that Haliburton blossoms into an All-Star. If Sacramento misses the postseason again and he thrives with the Pacers, this will be yet another failed trade that the Kings are on the losing end of.
