Having said all of that, losing on purpose is always controversial. “Tanking” will always have its detractors.
In fact, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver may be one of them. Recently, there have been plenty of suggestions about how the league could combat tanking. For example, Silver has spoken about adopting a relegation system that would be similar to soccer.
Frankly, we see potential problems. Go ahead and relegate the Houston Rockets or the Orlando Magic to the G-League. See if any team there can lose to them by under 50 points. Simply put, there aren’t enough teams to implement the system.
Perhaps there could be another solution. Alternatively, the NBA, to our eye, remains a very exciting product – couldn’t the league just it be?
