For a while, the center position appeared to be dying in the NBA. 

After all, we’re in the thick of the pace-and-space era. Even now, any contending team needs a small-ball lineup they can lean into. For some time, it felt like those would be the dominant lineups throughout the league. 

We may have overreacted to those trends. As it turns out, skill and versatility are what matters. Small ball remains viable, and times, extremely effective. Still, contending teams also need a reliable big man as well. 

Realistically, one needn’t look further than last year’s MVP race to validate that statement. Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid were the two leading vote-getters.
