Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
If the Knicks want to continue using Towns as a 4 in a twin towers setup, they’ve got the roster to do so.
After all, they could put him alongside either Mitchell Robinson or Isaiah Hartenstein. With three quality bigs on the roster, this move may portend another move. Still, the Knicks would have options.
For example, another option would be to just start Towns alongside Julius Randle. Defensively, it could be a rough go, but these two could rack up enough points together to render that a moot point. Their combined scoring and playmaking abilities would certainly be formidable.
More broadly, we know the Knicks want a star. Granted, most would likely expect them to move more draft capital instead of Barrett. That’s not feasible for the Wolves.

They’re in win-now mode, and acquiring Randle would present the same defensive issues they have with Towns.
This deal still allows them to continue with their plan of acquiring a star – whether it works or not.
