Often, when we write a Westbrook trade, we assume the team receiving him would be buying him out. Is that the case with the Mavericks?
To be fair, they could use a secondary ball-handler. Of course, Westbrook may not be the right one: wouldn’t he run into the same functional issues alongside Luka Doncic that he did with James?
Sure. Unless, of course, Westbrook was the sixth man. After all, Spencer Dinwiddie is off to a great start in 2022-23. Westbrook could run the show while Doncic was resting. At this stage of his career, that might be the best place for him.
Of course, if it doesn’t work out, there are still benefits for the Mavericks here. They’re getting off of long-term money, receiving an expiring contract in return, and getting a first-round pick.
