The future of the Golden State Warriors has been a hot topic in the NBA world for the last few weeks. It is something that Stephen Curry acknowledged recently when having an exclusive interview with The Mercury News.

“Whenever someone has success, the imagination wanders to when the end is and what is going to be the reason that it unfolds,” said Curry.

“I heard it back in 2019. I heard during the pandemic. We hear it a little louder now because we won again. We would have heard it louder had we not won. Nobody has any idea what’s going to happen.”

Some of those questions were answered last weekend when the Warriors agreed to extensions with two key players; Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins.

Poole was eligible for his rookie extension as he enters his fourth season in the NBA. He signed a four-year, $140 million extension, which was quickly followed by Wiggins signing a four-year, $109 million deal. That locks him in for five more seasons, as he was set to become a free agent in 2023.

Based on his performance, as Wiggins made his first All-Star game and was an elite defender, the Warriors are getting a steal on that extension. But, given how deep they are into the luxury tax, it is still a very costly deal.

Curry touched on that as well, mentioning Poole and Wiggins’ ascensions is not something that many people saw coming.

“Nobody last year could have guessed that JP (Jordan Poole) and Wiggs (Andrew Wiggins) would be in the situation they are in now. Potentially being coveted free agents that we locked into extensions. Not a lot of people put money on that.”

Next up for extensions are Curry’s long-time teammates Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. Thompson has admitted that he hasn’t talked to the organization about an extension and Green’s standing with the team has changed drastically after he punched Poole during practice a few weeks ago.

Curry has not been shy about his feelings of keeping the core veterans together for the duration of their careers in Golden State. But, all good things must come to an end eventually and Curry touched on when the end of this era of Warriors could be done.

“The conversations are part of what we do. For Draymond, Klay, me, we’ve been through it and we’re used to it. We hope that the end is when we don’t win. That should be the end, when there’s a sense that we’re not a championship-contending team. We know it’s not guaranteed to win a championship. When we know we’re a team that can legitimately win championships then you make certain decisions. We haven’t been in that situation.”

That is something that every professional player wants; to go out on their terms. Given how much they have meant to the Warriors, that trio very well could receive that treatment. Curry, at the very least, seems like he will as he is under contract through 2026, his age-37 season.
