The Golden State Warriors got to work this past weekend hammering out some new contracts for their players before the 2022-23 NBA season. Jordan Poole was the first player to agree to a new deal, as he earned a four-year, $140 million rookie extension.

Just a few hours after that, it was announced that the Warriors and Andrew Wiggins agreed to a four-year, $109 million extension that keeps him under contract for the next five seasons. It was a very team-friendly deal for Golden State, as Wiggins is taking a sizable pay cut to remain in Golden State long-term.

One player absent from getting a new deal is Draymond Green. Green is eligible for an extension as well and was seeking a max contract. That wasn’t something that the Warriors were interested in doing, so it was unlikely that Green was ever going to get an extension this offseason.

His future with the team was already up in the air before the altercation that he had with Jordan Poole during practice when Green struck him with a punch. That clouded Green’s future even more.

General manager Bob Myers recently spoke out about Green’s future with the team and believes that the veteran is in a good spot.

“Draymond’s in a great spot. He’s got a player option. It’s a great position for a player to be in. You control your own destiny,” Myers said. “I think he’s excited about the year and he wants to win another championship. He sees the opportunity in front of him. I talked to him this morning, I don’t sense any issues there or any problems with that. I imagine he’s going to have a fantastic year, I actually think he will have a great year, he’s got a lot on the line. Usually, when Draymond has a lot on the line he performs.”

Green is an important piece of the Golden State rotation as he is the heart and soul of the team. They always seem to struggle when he is sidelined, as the team loses its edge and some toughness without him.

However, the organization made it clear that they were prioritizing other things over making a deal with Green. While a deal could still be reached next offseason, it is looking more and more likely that the 2022-23 season will be the last that he spends in the Bay Area.
