Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
For Dallas, this is mostly about the extra injection of playmaking that Mitchell gives them.
As of now, they’re lacking in that department – beyond Luka Doncic, of course. He’s one of the very best playmakers in the NBA, but he still needs secondary ball handlers behind him to ease his burden.
Spencer Dinwiddie is qualified for the role, but as the second-best playmaker on a contender, he’s a little overtaxed. With that in mind, many would expect the Mavericks to swing a blockbuster deal for Doncic’s co-star. That would be one course of action, but it isn’t the only one.
Alternatively, the Mavericks could have secondary playmaking by committee. That’s exactly what they’d do if they added Mitchell. Moreover, his elite point-of-attack defense will make up for Doncic’s shortcomings on that end.

Adding him may no be a huge change, but it should be a large enough one to make the Mavericks better.
