The Golden State Warriors got busy this weekend working on some contract extensions. They made it pretty clear that rising NBA star Jordan Poole was their top priority, as they agreed to a four-year, $140 million rookie extension with him.

Poole was one of their best players during the run to the NBA Championship in June and has made major strides as a player in his three seasons with the team.

Locking him into a long-term deal instead of risking things in restricted free agency was smart. They avoided another potential bidding war with Andrew Wiggins as well. Wiggins took a very team-friendly deal, as his extension is actually a pay cut from the more than $33.6 million that he will be making this season.

Wiggins and the Warriors agreed to a four-year, $109 extension, as his contract with the team now runs for five more seasons. The first two seasons of his contract will be worth $24 million and $26 million, a significant drop in salary for a player coming off his first All-Star appearance. The final year of the contract is a player option as well.

That is an incredible deal for Golden State. They lock in a player entering his prime at a below-market value. Two-way wings of Wiggins’ caliber are players that are locking down max money in extensions; he just signed a deal that puts him in range with Anfernee Simons and Mike Conley Jr. for next season.

In addition to Poole, Tyler Herro also signed a rookie extension that will cost more than Wiggins’ deal did. His team is right above the range of what RJ Barrett signed for as well. One NBA executive that spoke to NBA Analysis Network shared his opinion on Wiggins’ new deal with the Warriors.

“This is a great deal for the Warriors. I don’t think he gets enough credit for what he brought to the table for their title run. He was often guarding the point-of-attack and filled his role offensively without an ego. He fits that offensive scheme great since it’s more off-the-catch attacks, cutting, and crashing the glass. It’ll be interesting to see how he builds on it after more time in their organization.”

It is hard to envision things not getting better for Wiggins. Another season in the system should only make him more comfortable on the court and knowing that Golden State will be his home for years to come has to put him at ease as well.
