Why The Sacramento Kings Do The Deal
This trade is a little risky for Hayward. Barnes is generally reliable, and Hayward, unfortunately, is a perennial injury risk.
On the other hand, a healthy Hayward adds more to this team. He’s a dynamic playmaker and secondary ball-handler who’ll also space the floor for the Kings’ star tandem of Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox.
Moreover, his skill set is vital for this roster. This deal has the Kings putting a lot of faith in rookie Keegan Murray. He’s a functionally similar player to Barnes – in fact, he was frequently compared to him leading up to the 2022 Draft.
Asking a rookie to replace a quality veteran is always a gamble. Still, Barnes’ role with these Kings is a relatively simple one. He’ll be asked to space the floor, attack closeouts when given the opportunity, and defend hard.
