The Golden State Warriors have some tough decisions to make when it comes to working out extensions. Multiple key players on the roster are eligible for them before the 2022-3 NBA season, but it is not possible to retain everyone.

While ownership has shown a willingness to pay top dollar to get them closer to a championship, everyone has a line that they cannot cross and the Warriors seem to be approaching that line. One of the players that they are going to be working on a deal with is Jordan Poole.

The first-round pick in the 2019 NBA Draft is eligible for his rookie extension right now. The two sides have until October 17th, which is opening night of the 2022-23 season, to get something worked out.

More serious negotiations began last week once the team arrived back home after taking part in the NBA’s Japan Games 2022 to start their preseason. During that time, another rookie extension was worked out that surprised a lot of people in the basketball world.

LATEST NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Jordan Poole, Golden State Warriors, Tyler Herro & Miami Heat Updates

Tyler Herro and the Miami Heat agreed to a four-year, $130 million deal after months of speculation that Miami was in no rush to get a deal done unless it was a team-friendly one. Alas, Herro got paid a nice sum of money and now it will have a direct impact on the negotiations that Golden State is having with Poole. Anthony Slater of The Athletic discussed it while making an appearance on the HoopsHype Podcast.

“As the Warriors were getting deeper into negotiations, suddenly the Heat, who are considered a top organization the Warriors respect, decided to put four years, $120 million we’ll call it, with other unlikely incentives to Herro. I think that set a baseline for Poole and his representatives that you’ve got to at least meet that. The Anfernee Simons and RJ Barrett comparisons were thrown out the window when Herro popped at that number. I think there will be haggling around that area. I think the baseline level is the four years, $120 million range if this is going to get done.”

Poole has made great strides as a player in the first three seasons of his career. It was a rough start as he was arguably the least efficient player in the NBA as a rookie but has turned into a key piece of the Warriors’ rotation.

Last season he excelled in the starting lineup in place of Klay Thompson until he was healthy enough to return. In the postseason, he was one of the best sixth men with highly efficient scoring as one of the team’s most consistent players.

Golden State has seemingly made Poole their No. 1 priority and it would not be surprising to see a deal get done before the deadline early next week.
