Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
You’ve probably guessed this already, but the Suns do this deal to land a younger replacement for Paul.
In fact, Russell is in a similar age bracket to most of this Suns core. He’s also not as good as Paul – the Suns would probably take a step back here. However, the hope would be that, in a few years, Russell could mesh with Devin Booker, Ayton, and Mikal Bridges well enough to work back toward contention.
Moreover, Russell is on an expiring contract. By contrast, Paul’s deal runs to the 2025-26 season. He’ll be 40 by the time it runs up. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s one that limits the Suns’ options.
If they don’t move Paul now, they could watch him deteriorate to the point where he has no trade value. That could set this franchise back. Moving him now while he can still help a team allows them to get some value in return.

Should the Wolves really pursue the aging point guard?
