There is no one way to build an NBA contender. Over the years, we’ve seen a number of teams use a number of strategies to rise to the top.
Take the Toronto Raptors. They had a good team for a number of years before they traded for Kawhi Leonard. Once they did so, they became a great one. Leonard led them to the 2018-19 NBA championship.
By contrast, the Milwaukee Bucks drafted the player that led them to a title. Nobody knew Giannis Antetokounmpo was going to develop into a player many considered the best in the world. Yet, that’s exactly what he’s become – and he vindicated that fact by leading the Bucks to the 2020-21 title.
Now, these two teams are in vastly different positions. Largely, that’s because Leonard left the Raptors, and Antetokoumpo is still a Buck.
