A lot of unwanted attention from around the NBA was put on the Golden State Warriors last week when news began circulating of the physical altercation that occurred between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole. When a video of it leaked the day after, the severity of the incident came to light.

A lot of people weighed in with their opinions on what should happen to Green. Current NBA players said that it would be tough to ever be teammates again after that incident and almost everyone agreed that a line had been crossed.

The next shoe people were waiting to drop was the punishment for him. The Warriors said that they would handle it internally and that he was unlikely to miss any games. That was before the video leaking, but it turned out that they held that stance anyway.

Green was fined an undisclosed amount but did not receive a suspension for his role in the altercation.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, a big reason for Green not receiving a suspension is that he would have missed the team’s ring ceremony and the 2022 championship banner being raised.

“I’m told that the Warriors put significant weight on the fact that opening night is also ring night and the hanging of the Warriors 2022 championship banner,” he said. “And they simply weren’t gonna measure that as a one-out-of-82-game suspension, that if this incident had landed in the middle of the regular season, there’d probably be a suspension. If the Warriors weren’t defending champions and were just playing an ordinary opening night, there might very well be a suspension.”

Actions have consequences and Green should know that. Suspending him and having him miss the festivities would have really sent a message about what he did being wrong; levying a fine against a millionaire has no such impact, otherwise, he wouldn’t rack up technical fouls in the fashion that he does.

Green has apologized for what he did, but there are still some hard feelings there that will take a significant amount of time to heal if they ever heal at all.
