Cam Reddish Unlikely To Receive Knicks Contract Extension

The New York Knicks spent a lot of money this NBA offseason locking up players for long-term deals. They locked down two players of their core, Mitchell Robinson and RJ Barrett, with lucrative deals to ensure that they remained with the franchise for years to come.

Robinson signed a four-year, $60 million deal and is one of the premier shot blockers in the NBA and an above-the-rim player offensively. Barrett, the face of the franchise, signed a four-year deal as well that could be worth up to $120 million. If he continues ascending in the fashion that he has thus far in his career, he will outperform that contract.

In addition to retaining them, the Knicks also spent a lot of money in free agency. They signed Jalen Brunson, arguably the best free agent in this past summer’s class, to a four-year, $104 deal to become their new starting point guard. Center Isaiah Hartenstein was signed away from the LA Clippers, agreeing to a two-year, $16 million deal to bring a new dimension to the team’s frontcourt.

Another player that is hoping to cash in before the regular season begins is Cam Reddish. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft is eligible for a rookie extension, just as Barrett was, but it does not sound like he will be receiving a new deal from the Knicks.

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, New York is unlikely to extend Reddish before the deadline of October 17th. Reddish landed in The Big Apple in a January trade from the Atlanta Hawks as he was hoping to find more playing time but that has been tough to come by thus far with the Knicks.

Reddish was not in the rotation after the trade until injuries occurred. Once he began finding his footing he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Coming into the offseason his role with the team was unknown but he was going to be given a chance to earn a role in the preseason.

Unfortunately for Reddish, he injured his ankle. While he played through it and started the team’s second preseason game with Evan Fournier resting, Reddish struggled, making 1-of-7 shots.

“I shot the ball terribly. But I showed flashes here and there,” Reddish told reporters after the game. “I did what I could. Obviously, it’s a lot different than what I’m accustomed to. But I’m trying to figure it out.”

Right now it looks as if Reddish is beyond Fournier and Quentin Grimes for playing time on the wing. He played some power forward last season, but there is little chance he receives minutes there with Obi Toppin getting the scraps behind Julius Randle.

At this point, the only way Reddish will see an expanded role in Tom Thibodeau’s rotation is if an injury occurs. Not yet showing he can produce at a level necessary for a team looking to make the playoffs, an extension won’t come unless he takes a very team-friendly deal.
