Marvin Bagley III Sidelined To Start Pistons’ Season

The Detroit Pistons hold high hopes for what Marvin Bagley III will offer on the court during the 2022-23 NBA season. It may take some time before they are able to see it come to fruition.

Bagley slipped awkwardly early in the Pistons’ preseason matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday. It appeared to be caused by a wet spot on the court, which ultimately resulted in him holding his right knee before needing helped off the court to go to the locker room.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Bagley underwent an MRI, and it revealed that he will miss time to begin the start of the season due to what was diagnosed as a bone bruise and sprained MCL. An estimated timetable for return is 3-4 weeks.

“MRI on the right knee of Detroit Pistons F Marvin Bagley III reveals that he will miss time to start the season, but there’s relief that he’s avoided a serious injury, sources tell ESPN,” Wojnarowski reported. “Bagley III will miss 3-4 weeks with a bone bruise and sprained MCL in right knee.”

Bagley brought a lot of excitement to Pistons fans after averaging 14.6 points and 6.8 rebounds (27.0 minutes per game) in 18 appearances after the midseason trade from the Sacramento Kings. However, his limitations as a poor jump shooter and deficient defender were displayed.

There was reporting that Bagley was receiving consideration as a starter to bring Bogdanovic off the bench before his injury. There has been a willingness from Pistons coach Dwane Casey to deploy bigger lineup combinations with Isaiah Stewart.
