There is plenty of buzz around the Rockets’ young core. To be sure, it’s justified. 

Jalen Green could lead the NBA in scoring one day. Jabari Smith Jr. could be the league’s premier 3-and-D wing, and if he ever develops a handle, he could be much more. Throw in talented young players like Kevin Porter Jr., Alperen Sengun, and Tari Eason, and it’s easy to understand why this fanbase is electrified. 

On the other hand, Green could be Zach LaVine, and Smith Jr. could be Mikal Bridges. Those would be fine outcomes for each, but it wouldn’t be enough to bring the Larry O’Brien trophy back to Space City.

The Rockets have been the worst team in the NBA for two consecutive seasons – with a potentially historic draft on the horizon, what’s one more?

Trading Eric Gordon would be a strong step in the direction of the bottom. As it stands, he’s the most experienced player on this team and arguably the most impactful. 

Meanwhile, the Suns are unlikely to join the tank race, and they need guard depth. Finally, the Bucks will absolutely not be tanking, and they could use Crowder. In other words, this deal is a win/win/win.
