Basketball fans were treated to quite a spectacle this week when the top two prospects in the 2023 NBA Draft class faced off against each other in Nevada. Victor Wembanyama of Metropolitans 92, considered the No. 1 prospect in the class, took on G League Elite led by Scoot Henderson, the second-best prospect.

Henderson and Elite took home a 122-115 victory, but people came away astonished by what Wembanyama was able to do. This was the first time that many people got to see him play and they were certainly not disappointed with the performance that he put on.

It is awe-inspiring watching what he is capable of doing at 7’4” tall. He has a smooth shooting stroke as he knocked down seven 3-pointers in the game. His ball-handling was on display as well as he would bring the ball up the court as the point guard, break down his opponent at the top of the key and drive to the basket for a layup.

Defensively is where Wembanyama could have his greatest impact. Length like that is very difficult to score on as he can deter shots with ease. He racked up five blocks in the game earlier this week.

Many people believe that Wembanyama is the most hyped-up prospect since LeBron James. He is garnering attention from people around the world for his blend of size and skill and will change the trajectory of whichever franchise is lucky enough to select him, just like James did for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

James spoke about Wembanyama earlier this week. Like everyone else, the veteran is impressed by what he has seen.

“Everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years, but he’s more like an alien,” said James. “No one has ever seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is out on the floor.”

Normally when players are that big, there is some clunkiness and awkwardness to their game as they are figuring out how to put their size to good use. That is not an issue for Wmbanyama, who has perimeter skills despite being a big man.

We are going to see tanking of epic proportions during the upcoming 2022-23 season. Teams are going to do whatever they can to ensure that they have the best chance of landing the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft possible.
